(Newport, Oregon) – As the Oregon coast gears up for the big season, so do some parking meters.
Newport’s paid parking program returns to a seven-day schedule on Friday, May 1, running through October and covering the Bayfront and - new this year – it now includes the Nye Beach Turnaround. It is only the Turnaround, however: the rest of Nye Beach is free.
Vehicles displaying valid disability placards, plates, or permits may continue to park for free in any City-managed paid parking area, excluding private lots.
The City is expanding the program to include the Nye Beach turnaround lot, where parking will cost $1 per hour with no time limit from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Street parking in the surrounding Nye Beach neighborhood remains free for up to three hours during the same hours. Monthly and annual zone permits will be available to Nye Beach businesses, employees, and residential property owners in time-limited areas, with day permits offered for lodging guests.
It all may come as a surprise to some Oregon coast visitors who haven't been there in awhile.
City spokesman John Fuller told Oregon Coast Beach Connection that paid parking in town has been in place for more than a couple years.

“The program in general is entering its third year,” he said. “November through March, paid parking is only on weekends. So the return is for the 7 days per week portion.”
For most that won't be a new encounter. Nye Beach's Turnaround is the latest development, however.
“This is the first year of it in Nye Beach,” Fuller said. “It was discussed last year, and it was determined more outreach, discussion, and collaboration with the local businesses and residents needed to take place prior to implementation.”

Bayfront parking rates will remain $1 per hour for up to four hours between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily. Monthly and annual permits are available to Bayfront businesses, employees, and members of the fishing industry, while day permits are offered for fishing charters. Free parking continues to be available on SW Hurbert Street.
Visitors can pay at nearby kiosks, by text message, or by scanning QR codes posted throughout the districts.
“Revenue generated from the paid parking program is reinvested into improvements and programs exclusively within the City’s parking districts,” said the City of Newport. “In March, Newport City Council approved a contract to repair several sidewalk sections along Bay Blvd., enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout the Bayfront.”

That project, the City said, is expected to be completed before the beginning of summer.
