(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – It's been a long, dark winter for some on the Oregon coast. Cannon Beach's Ecola State Park got shut down again late last year – but was abruptly opened on Monday without fanfare or announcement. (Photos OPRD - above: northern section of the road as it started to crack).
Until the next day, that is.
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) announced Tuesday it has reopened Ecola State Park to the public as of April 6, 2026, following months of repair work on a landslide that forced the park’s closure on December 11, 2025.
OPRD passed along some of the destruction and reconstruction photos of the project to Oregon Coast Beach Connection. These are shown here in a pictorial style, and you're looking at a variety of areas that were wrecked by slides.

The slide, triggered by an atmospheric river storm, damaged Ecola Park Road and Indian Beach Road, destabilizing the ground and cutting off safe access. Engineers and geologists recommended a full closure while the extent of the damage was assessed.

Meanwhile, nearby Hug Point is still closed due to major drainage issues that are preventing cliff and stairway repairs.
Progress through the winter was slowed by persistent rain, additional slide movement, and limited availability of construction materials. Despite the setbacks, crews advanced repairs whenever conditions allowed.

Slide at the southern end
The most recent stabilization effort, overseen by Coastal Region Project Manager Dave Lihou and completed by Bob McEwan Construction/Bayview Asphalt, has now secured the affected area. Officials described the work as applying a “fresh bandage” to an active landslide zone - an important step that restores access while acknowledging the terrain remains dynamic.

After reconstruction
“We’re grateful for the patience of visitors and the dedication of our project partners,” Park Manager Ben Cox said. “With any luck, we’ll operate without interruption for a good long while.”

Ecola State Park is open for day-use recreation. Visitors are encouraged to check current conditions and review park advisories before traveling. Check the park’s webpage, https://stateparks.oregon.gov/ index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=136
