Oregon is expanding its car-free access to the coastline.

Oregon Coast Visitors Association (OCVA) just announced the North Coast Express – a new bus route that runs from Portland to the beach and up to Astoria and Tillamook during the summer months. The new bus system goes live on Memorial Weekend, Friday, May 23.

“Just in time for summer adventures, a new seasonal transit option will connect Portland with some of the Oregon Coast’s most iconic destinations,” OCVA said.

The North Coast Express offers up scenic and flexible service from the Beaverton Transit Center, with the Northbound Express and Southbound Express. Northward stops at Seaside Cannon Beach and Astoria. The Southbound Express runs to Rockaway Beach and then the Tillamook Creamery.

A midday connecting service lets you hop off and then hop on other buses between those coastal towns.

The two bus routes leave Beaverton in the morning and then return in the evening, which the OCVA said gives “ passengers ample time to enjoy local attractions, food, and the coastline.”

“Building on the region’s growing network of car-free travel options, the North Coast Express offers a new, stress-free way to experience the North Coast - no keys required,” OCVA said. “Riders can enjoy a full day of coastal exploration or plan a longer stay with flexible return-day ticketing.”

All buses come with numerous comfort features, including onboard restrooms, free Wi-Fi with charging ports and panoramic windows and reclining seats. There are wheelchair lifts for fully accessible boarding.

There is some storage for surfboards, bikes, coolers and other large items – but that is limited. Tickets so far appear to range from about $40 - $50.

The northbound portion so far indicates a schedule of departing at 9:45 a.m., then stopping in various towns and returning to Beaverton about 7:30 p.m. The southbound schedule departs at 8:30 a.m. Schedules only run Friday through Sunday and into August.

Tickets, schedules, and full route details are available at www.visittheoregoncoast.com/express. Questions can be directed to express@thepeoplescoast.com
