(Neskowin, Oregon) – Nearly six months of a lane closure on the north Oregon coast near Neskowin are over.
Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced Monday that U.S. 101 south of Neskowin is fully open again after two landslides damaged the highway during the December 2025 storms. This returns all lanes to normal traffic flow along this stretch of the Oregon Coast Highway.
The slides occurred between mileposts 102 and 103, where saturated ground gave way beneath the roadway after days of heavy rain. The pavement cracked and dropped several feet, forcing crews to stabilize the slope before rebuilding the damaged section and reopening the highway.
Back on December 19 was the largest event. The route was closed off completely for a time but by the next day ODOT had the one lane open – and there were long delays for a time after that. ODOT even suggested using other routes if possible.

To keep this key coastal route moving, crews maintained one-lane traffic through the work zone with round-the-clock flagging until the highway reopened on Saturday. The repair effort required specialized engineering and close coordination among ODOT, the Federal Highway Administration, contractors and local officials.
With the major work complete, traffic is once again moving normally. Permanent striping is scheduled for Wednesday this week, weather permitting, as one of the final steps in the emergency repair.

Crews rebuilt the hillside beneath the highway while keeping traffic flowing. The work involved excavating unstable soil, installing soil nails to reinforce the slope, constructing a retaining block wall, rebuilding the road base, repaving the surface, and installing new guardrail and striping. Contractors included Geostabilization International, Road and Driveway Co. and D&H Flagging Inc.

The December 2025 storms caused widespread damage across northwest Oregon, triggering multiple landslides and long-term closures. In several locations, including this section of U.S. 101, the failure occurred beneath the roadway, requiring crews to reconstruct the ground before repairing the surface.
OR 229 remains closed after a landslide during the same storm destroyed part of the highway. ODOT is developing plans for a temporary local access road while designing a long-term project to rebuild the route permanently.
