(Oceanside, Oregon) – Dig further into the beach without actually being there. It's a digital trip to the Oregon coast that is live.
Friends of Netarts Bay-WEBS will present the second webinar in its 2026 “Producers of the Bay” series on Wednesday, March 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a program focused on seaweeds, invasive green crabs and the changing conditions of Oregon’s coastal blue ecosystems. The session will examine how climate change and non-native species are reshaping nearshore environments, and how science-informed, ancestral stewardship and harvesting practices can help strengthen ecosystem resilience.
The virtual field trip will explore the ecological roles of seaweeds and invasive green crabs while drawing from marine ecology, the Indigenous 13 Moons seasonal framework and Asian coastal food traditions. Organizers say the goal is to connect ecosystem literacy with culinary nourishment, showing how traditional and contemporary knowledge can work together to support both environmental health and coastal foodways.

Dr. Siew Sun Wong of Oregon State University’s School of Nutrition and Public Health and Dr. Samuel Chan of OSU’s Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences will share insights into Oregon’s nearshore systems. They will discuss how thoughtful harvesting and cooking practices can turn ecological challenges into opportunities for stewardship, sustainability and meaningful meals.
Seaweed samples will be available for registrants to pick up at the WEBS office to enjoy during the presentation. Pickup details will be provided to participants after registration.
More information and registration are available at netartsbaywebs.org/events. Questions or cancellations can be directed to info@netartsbaywebs.org.
