(Oceanside, Oregon) – The former House on the Hill motel property above Oceanside served as a rescue staging area Friday, after a paraglider became caught on the cliff, some 80 feet above the surf. (Photos NOFD)
Netarts-Oceanside Fire District (NOFD) and its volunteers came to the rescue of the paraglider, who was practically dangling from brush and a small outcropping on the side of Maxwell Point.
The photo from the crew's drone shows the sail /glider stuck to the side of the cliff. Rescuers had to rappel down the slope and grab the individual. They then worked in tandem with others in the team to pull the glider out.
NOFD fire chief Jeff McBrayer told Oregon Coast Beach the accident was caused by winds.
“She was about 80’ from the beach on a steep cliff on the north side of Maxwell Mountain," McBrayer said. “She had just taken off from the launch site and got caught in a downdraft which blew her into a tree.”

Paragliders launch off the top of Maxwell Point, a couple hundred feet above where the motel property is.

McBrayer said she was not injured.
“Great pilot, great crew,” he said of all those invovled. “We assisted their team in retrieving her glider.”

The U.S. Coast Guard told Oregon Coast Beach Connection that while they had been called, the glider pilot was rescued before they were able to arrive.
