(Oregon Coast) – Next Saturday, October 14, we get to see a rare occurrence in Oregon as the annular solar eclipse takes place around 8 a.m., first arriving on the south Oregon coast. It will cut a darkened path from about Depoe Bay down through Klamath Falls as it erupts with a ring of fire when the moon covers nearly all of it. (Photo Oregon Coast Beach Connection)
However, how is the weather going to hold up? According to preliminary predictions from the National Weather Service (NWS), it's looking rather iffy. Yet there's a decent chance the cloud cover won't show up on Saturday.
It's still too early to be sure, NWS cautions, but right now the predictions for the bulk of the Oregon coast are mostly cloudy for Saturday with varying chances of rain. Even down south around Reedsport and Coos Bay – where it's often a little mellower – the forecast is largely the same. Once you get east of the Oregon Coast Range, eclipse weather seems to improve just slightly, with the NWS predicting a chance of showers and mostly to partly cloudy. That includes Eugene (as well as Portland and Salem). However, Klamath Falls through Crater Lake are looking at partly sunny conditions.
So far, anyway.

The rain that's about to hit the coast, Salem, Portland, Eugene and other parts of the western half of Oregon will be waning on Wednesday through Friday.
“So, we expect a return of drier, milder weather then,” the NWS said. “Early indications for the Oct 14th annular solar eclipse are that there will at least be some high level cloudiness from a Pacific disturbance that will be approaching the coast. It's still way too early to be timing that system, but ensemble clusters (23%) do give some hope that this system is delayed with the axis of the upper ridge remaining over the area through Friday night. We`ll keep following this and try to hone in on the model trends over the coming days.”
