Oregon Travel News: Portland Eatery Combines Jazz with Stellar Cuisine

(Portland, Oregon) – Portland club and restaurant Perlot is kicking out the jams this month, when it comes to jazz. The place known for its creative, globally-inspired dishes, Perlot is also one of Portland’s best live jazz neighborhood spots. Renowned local and regional jazz performers serenade the room during the weekend’s brunches and evenings, combining top live jazz with creative, globally inspired dishes from Iron Chef America winner Executive Chef Patrick McKee.

This month brings out a heavy-hitter season of music, happening Friday and Saturday nights from 7-10 pm, as well as during brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Among the performers:

The Sonny Hess Band. Veteran guitarist vocalist, Sonny Hess has played in Portland’s top bands over the decades, including The Koffee Band and Margo Tufo’s Blues Sisters, and Paulette Davis. This band won Portland’s music association Crystal award for outstanding R&B act of the year. Paulette Davis gave Sonny the nickname ‘Sonny Smokin’ Hess’, they played together for four years and out of that came the CD “It’s About Damn Time.”

The Michael Raynor Trio. Drummer Michael Raynor splits his time between Portland and Chicago, where he spent more than twenty years playing with tenor sax icon and NEA Jazz Master, Von Freeman. Raynor also toured extensively with vocalist Kurt Elling and can be heard on two of his Grammy nominated recordings, including "Live in Chicago," featuring Jon Hendricks. He has worked with Freddie Hubbard, Arturo Sandoval, Eric Alexander, Johnny Griffin, Ira Sullivan, Jon Faddis, Bobby Broom, Fareed Haque, Howard Levy, Bob Sheppard, Tia Fuller, Steve Coleman, Chuck Israels, and Bob Dorough among others.

The Hot Club of Hawthorne is a collective of musicians who play gypsy jazz: old-time swing and world music played on acoustic stringed instruments, with exotic Old World flair, a fiery delivery, and feelgood charm. The Hot Club was founded in 2011 by guitarist Jeffree White, who has wowed Oregon audiences for 20 years with his extravagant guitar stylings, whimsical delivery, versatility, and flamboyant presence.

The Greg Goebel Quartet. From straight ahead jazz, funk and pop, to the avant garde, Greg Goebel is considered one of the Northwest's first call pianists.

Cameron Morgan is a singer/songwriter, virtuoso guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and composer. His propensity for reverb drenched psychedelic rock informed his early musical development even as he completed a B.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas in 1998. Soon after, Cameron took his improvisational style (steeped in alternate tunings and odd-time signatures) on the road – first New York then Los Angeles. In 2008, he relocated to Portland, Oregon.

The Ed Bennett Trio’s Bennett has long been considered one of the West Coast's premiere string bass players. He has worked with, toured internationally, or recorded with many legendary jazz figures, including: Dizzy Gillespie, Curtis Fuller, Terell Stafford, Claudio Roditi, Jeremy Pelt, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt, Benny Golson, Frank Morgan, Richie Cole, Pete Christlieb, Bud Shank and many more.

Clay Giberson. An innovative voice in the contemporary jazz scene of the Pacific Northwest, pianist and composer Clay Giberson is part of a new generation that is redefining jazz. Emotionally compelling, the music grooves as much as it dazzles with harmony, lyricism and rhythmic intricacy.

Nick Rolfe & the Project. Along with his musical talents Nick has added acting to his resume, appearing on-screen with Academy Award winners Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes in the Emmy Nominated, Golden Globe nominated HBO Film "Doris and Bernard" directed by Bob Balaban, and with Brooke Shields in the NBC series "Lipstick Jungle".
