(Bandon, Oregon) – Maybe it's not a yearly tradition in Bandon, but crab feasts that benefit a cause are a south Oregon coast tradition in one way or another. Even if it's only most years. (Courtesy photo)

Bandon Crab Fest steps into that role this weekend in the laidback south Oregon coast port town. Yummy grub, rollicking and rocking tunes and festive crowds are all on the menu this Saturday, March 9, taking place from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. at the Bandon Fisheries Warehouse Event Center (250 First Avenue SE).

Individual tickets are $65 (includes music and whole crab meal), and a table of 8 people can snag the crustacean frivolity for $480.

There's a full crab dinner involved plus entertainment, and it supports local Booster Clubs in the Bandon / Curry County area.

This year, the fine eats includes:

For appetizers, there's a fresh garden salad and clam chowder (gluten free). The main course is – you guessed it – crab. It's also crab that comes straight from local boats, according to Visit Bandon. It's served with drawn butter and bread from locals Empire Bakery, plus coleslaw. There's also locally-made special desserts and a variety of beverages, including a no-host bar.

Some Oregon coast-made goodies will be featured with Bandon's own On the Waterfront Wines and Reedsport's Two Shy Brewing beers.

Margaret Pounder with Visit Bandon told Oregon Coast Beach Connection the crowds over the years can fill up the venue, meaning occasionally some 200 folks at a time chomping down and digging the jams. This official version got started in 2019, proving so popular they did another. In 2020, the Bandon Crab Fest went two days, so the fun was twice as long.

“Over the years there have been many crab feeds (coastal city and all) - took a couple of years off after COVID and started up again this year,” she said.

Featured entertainment are two southern Oregon acts: Jeff Kloetzel and Brothers Reed.

Kloetzel is a singer/songwriter based in Oregon. His music is driven by soulful vocals and rhythmic guitar work. The Brothers Reed fire up the harmonica and percussion on stage, specializing in barn-burning bluegrass numbers that familiar and original.
