| Night Closures to Begin Monday on Highway to North Oregon Coast

(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – Work on the Dennis Edwards Tunnel along Highway 26 to the north Oregon coast will begin a little earlier than expected.
Previously, ODOT had said the work – which would result in nighttime closures of the tunnel – would begin on January 18 at the very earliest. Today, ODOT announced the work will begin on Monday, January 17.
“The contractor for the U.S. 26 Dennis Edwards Tunnel project is beginning work this Monday night,” said ODOT in a press release. “From January 17 until late May 2011, the tunnel will be closed Sunday nights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Monday - Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. A signed detour will be in place during tunnel closures that will add 15 miles or 25 minutes to the drive time.”
The tunnel will be open during the day, each weekday and all throughout each weekend, leaving it clear all the way to the coast. Work will also halt during the spring break weeks in March.
Highway 26 is the main route from Portland to Cannon Beach and Seaside.
More closures and delays are set for Highway 18 to Lincoln City and Highway 6 to Tillamook.
Highway 18 will be subject to a project that involves cutting down rotten trees that threaten the highway, starting January 24 and going for almost a month. That project will result in 10 to 15-minute delays along that highway.
Highway 6 is actually opening up a small degree during a project along a bridge about 30 miles from Tillamook. There will still be some delays and flaggers, but both lanes of the bridge will open up.
More on those projects here.
