(Lincoln City, Oregon) – Firefighters have made some major dents in the Echo Mountain Fire on the central Oregon coast, which caused Lincoln City to essentially close to tourists. Evacuation orders within Lincoln City limits have been lifted and Highway 18 is back open. However, it is still suggested you use the detours to get to Lincoln City from the valley, in order to reduce traffic strains on that road.

The town is slowly opening back up, and all air alerts have been lifted from the entire Oregon coast. Certainly other areas outside of Lincoln City (Cannon Beach, Pacific City, Bandon, Coos Bay, Yachats, Rockaway Beach, Newport, etc) are just fine ‘n dandy with visitors and the air is clear. Some evacuation orders remain for those along Highway 18 and in areas closer to the fire.

At this time, Lincoln City hotels are accepting visitors and most businesses are back open, but no one is actively waving visitors back in.

According to Lincoln County officials, the Echo Mountain Fire is 40 percent contained, although Tuesday’s rains were not as much as firefighters hoped.

“Firefighters are working to clean up and secure the fire,” a county spokesman said. “Cleaning is the methodical process of detecting hot spots around the perimeter of the fire and removing the heat. This is usually done using water, but using the high relative humidity to help is also a tactic firefighters will employ. Fire resources will continue this process over the next several days to ensure there are no threats to the fire line.”

The meteorologist working on the project predicts more significant rainfall over the fire area later in the week, with today’s temperatures cooler than yesterday. The area will be seeing the upper 60s and higher relative humidity.

Work continues along Highway 18, however the highway is open to traffic. Travelers can expect to be guided through the fire zone by pilot cars. Drivers are also reminded that fire resources will remain in the area and that driving times can be significantly longer than normal.
