(Newport, Oregon) – Newport's Yaquina Birders & Naturalists group presents two more events in June about nature along the Oregon coast, including a discussion of clams and a field trip that's for the birds.
On Thursday, June 19, Steven Rumrill presents "The ODFW Shellfish Program of Assessment and Management of Bay Clams in Oregon Estuaries."
Rumrill is the ODFW's Shellfish Program Leader. Their primary mission is to monitor and manage shellfish resources, marine invertebrates, and their habitats to provide sustained benefits to current and future generations of Oregonians. This Yaquina Birders & Naturalists meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Meeting Room of Central Lincoln PUD (2129 North Coast Highway) in north Newport. Cost is free and the public is welcomes. More information can be obtained at 541-265-2965.
Then comes the guided field trip to Yaquina Head.
On Saturday, June 21m it's "Birds of Yaquina Head" at the central Oregon coast landmark. Ram Papish, local birder and wildlife artist (http://www.rampapish.com/bio.htm), will lead this Yaquina Birders & Naturalists field trip.
June is the best time of year to look for nesting seabirds at Yaquina Head Outstanding NaturalArea. You are likely to see Common Murre, Pigeon Guillemot, Black Oystercatcher, Brandt's Cormorant, Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Brown Pelican. Meet in the parking lot by the Yaquina Head Lighthouse at 9:00 a.m. and dress or bring clothes for variable weather.
The field trip will last two hours. While this event is free and open to everyone, there is a vehicle fee to enter Yaquina Head without a pass. For more information call 541-961-1307. Photo below of a Common Murre, credit Ram Papish.
