(Newport, Oregon) – As spring comes barreling in along the central Oregon coast, the towns of Newport, Depoe Bay and Yachats light up with a variety of events (above: Yachats at night).

May 7. Rick Brown from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Rick Brown will give a slide presentation about the activities and responsibilities of NOAA. May 7, 21, 28, 29. Sea Lion Encounter. Learn about the Aquarium’s pinnipeds, get a sea lion kiss behind the scenes at the aquarium. Ages 8 and up. Call ahead for reservations. 10-11:00 a.m. Oregon Coast Aquarium, South Beach. Newport, Oregon. 541-867-3474. www.aquarium.org.
May 7, 14, 21, 28. Interpretive Dive: Oregon Kelp Forest. Did you know there are vast underwater forests right off the Oregon coast? Bull kelp, with massive blades stretching as long as 100 feet, form an intricate aquatic habitat that is vital to the survival of many coastal species. 11-11:15 a.m. Oregon Coast Aquarium, South Beach. May 14. Migratory Bird Day: Go Wild, Go Birding! A fun day focused on our aquarium birds, including turkey vultures, tufted puffins, common murres, rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemots and black oystercatchers. May 14. Spring Garden Sale. Presented by Lincoln County Master Gardener Association. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Featuring: annuals, perennials, veggies, herbs, native plants, soil testing (pH only), gardern tools, book sale, compost info, cloche raffle. May 28. Yachats Ladies Club Memorial Day Pie and Ice Cream Social. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Yachats Ladies Club House. W. 3rd & Pontiac St. 541-547-3205. Yachats, Oregon.
May 29. Yachats Lions Pancake Breakfast. All you can eat pancakes with eggs over easy, choice of sausage or ham, milk, tea or coffee. $6 for adults, $3 for children under 12 years. 7:30-11:30 a.m. Yachats Lions Hall. W. 4th & Pontiac St. Yachats, Oregon.
May 29. Family Sleepover at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Fall asleep to the soothing sights of the sharks and fish swimming overhead in the Passages of the Deep tunnels. Aquarium educators take families on a scavenger hunt and provide a fun and hands-on experience. Dinner, snack and breakfast are included. Call at least two weeks in advance to register. May 30. 66th Fleet of Flowers Memorial Day Ceremonies. Pay tribute to those lost at sea while watching the flower-bedecked fishing fleet sail to sea. 11 a.m. with a reception following. Depoe Bay Harbor. Depoe Bay, Oregon.
