Oregon Coast New Year's Eve Celebrations:
from Classy to Quirky
 |
| Holiday frivolity on the coast |
(Oregon Coast) – It’s the pinnacle of holiday
frivolity on the coast, and a holiday that rivals that of any other around
the entire world. In this country, it eclipses even Halloween and comes
close to bumping the Fourth of July in its bid for rager of the year.
On the Oregon coast, however, New Year’s Eve means
a special kind of spirit of fun, one that’s joyfully skewed in some
instances. It’s a time when the more colorful locals erupt in wacky
celebration, and out-of-towners fly their freak flag a bit more boldly
when they mix booze with getting out of their usual environment.
Whatever you’re looking for: kooky and off-kilter
fun or a cozy, warm send-off to 2007 via a classy dinner, the Oregon coast
provides it somewhere.
Here’s are highlights from some of the bigger celebrations,
including a list of fine dining experiences and suggestions for fun coastal
wateringholes to visit. Click

Landmark Lounge. Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes.
It’s a blue New Year’s with this Muddy Award-winning band.
Kevin is a recent transplant from the East Coast and has taken Portland
by storm. In his former life based in Virginia he was a mainstay for the
Virginia, D.C., Maryland and New York clubs playing 1500 shows in a 10
year period. Since his arrival in Portland he’s demonstrated the
skill and enthusiasm necessary to crack into the tough Northwest blues
scene. He was recently nominated for two Muddy Awards by the Cascade Blues
Association for best electric guitar player and best new act. Free. 9
p.m. Hwy 101, Yachats. (541) 547-5459.
Yachats River House. New Year’s
Eve Black & White Ball. Two seatings: one at 5 p.m. and the other
at 7:30 p.m. It’s $75 per person and includes a five-course meal.

| Magical, mystical Manzanita will show its
true colors on NYE |
Manzanita
San Dune Pub. Legendary hangout with live
music and full service bar. Always loads of fun on New Year’s Eve
with some large celebration or another. Laneda Ave., Manzanita, Oregon.
(503) 368-5080.
Manzanita’s Wacko Midnight Parade.
A little known secret about Manzanita’s New Year’s celebrations
is its New Year Parade at midnight, which has been a surreal little local
tradition that’s been happening for at least a few years. Generally,
people just stagger out of the local bars and perform an oddball parade
of sorts – proof again of the kooky and creative side to the fun-loving
locals. Now, only the San Dune exists in Manzanita, but some may be coming
from nearby The Wateringhole in Nehalem or Sea Shack in Wheeler. In the
past, there was, among other things, a large dragon costume. It’s
quite a spectacle. In recent years, the city grudgingly gave it’s
okay for the parade, partially on the basis it would happen with or without
the permit.
