Wintry Conditions Possible for Oregon Coast
Range Through Sunday
 |
The winter advisory for the coast range means scenes like this at
higher elevations: some snow on the sides of the roads, but the blacktop
itself will be mostly clear - and NOT icey. |
(Portland, Oregon) – This weekend may see a dusting
of snow on the valley floor as well as on the Oregon coast beaches, and
along with this the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter
weather advisory for the coast range, the western Columbia Gorge and other
areas of higher elevation.
The advisory is primarily for the late evening and wee
hours of Sunday morning, with some of the day included: it’s in
effect from 10 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The advisory affects
half of the entire coast range, from the central coast northward, as well
as the western half of the gorge: including towns like Vernonia, Jewell,
Trask, Grande Ronde, Swisshome, Hood River, Stevenson, Skamania and Cascade
Locks.
Highway 84 to the east of Portland will be affected, as
well as Highway 6, Highway 18 and Highway 26.
For the coast range, the NWS predicts two to six inches
of new snow in the north and central coast range through mid-day on Sunday.

Highway 6, between Tillamook and Portland. |
“The snow level will be lowering to around 1500 feet
tonight and 1000 feet or lower Sunday,” said the NWS in a bulletin.
“The heaviest amounts will be at higher elevations, with the lower
amounts near the passes through the coast range. The snow will taper off
later Sunday as the low responsible for the snow moves south of the area.”
What this essentially means for drivers through the coast
range is that the higher summits along Highway 6 or 26 will have some
snow on the road, and that will begin melting quickly in the afternoon.
Driving to the coast on Saturday evening will be clear, and if there are
any problems on the roads – and “if” should be stressed
– they will be at the higher elevations and will likely be gone
by late Sunday afternoon.
Even so, what's likely is slushy conditions on the roads
- not icey.
 |
Pacific City may look like this on Sunday morning. But all will
be gone by noon.
|
The NWS said this advisory means you should use caution
on the roads, be prepared for some limited visibility and snow on the
roads. It may require slowing down at times, but it won’t create
impassable roads in any way.
Since there may be a chance to catch a glimpse of rare
snow on the beaches, this is a prime time to head to the beach. To avoid
any problems whatsoever, head to the coast by Saturday night and head
back in the late afternoon. Towns like Lincoln City, Newport, Seaside,
Cannon Beach, Tillamook and Oceanside will be easily accessible.
For the Columbia Gorge, the advisory is shorter, in effect
from 10 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday. There, the NWS says one to three
inches of snow are possible during that time.
The freezing elevation will be near sea level during Saturday
and Sunday.
“Brisk east winds will produce areas of blowing snow,
especially west of Cascade Locks,” said the NWS. “The snow
will taper off Sunday afternoon as a system moves south of the area.”
