Snow Warning for Traveling Oregon Coast Range Today, Tuesday

(Oregon
Coast) – The National Weather Service has issued a travel warning
for the coast range passes for the central Oregon coast and the north
coast. This would include Highway 18, Highway 26, Highway 20 and Highway
126, and includes the cities of Vernonia, Jewell, Trask, Tidewater, Swisshome,
Frances and Ryderwood.
The advisory is in effect until Tuesday evening. Snow showers will be somewhat scattered on Monday, then increase later in the day and evening as two separate precipitation bands will move onshore.
The NWS says one to three inches of snow are possible Monday, with an additional three to six inches later in the evening, and another three to sixes inches possible on Tuesday.

Snow levels will plunge to 1000 feet, but rise to around 1500 feet Monday evening. Most of the summits along these highways are around 1400 to 1800 feet – the highest of which is along Highway 26 between Seaside, Cannon Beach and Portland. Much of the coast range is above 1000 feet. That puts drivers well above the snow level throughout this advisory period.

A surface low is coming onshore from the ocean, bringing with it the frozen precipitation.
Additional snow is likely on Tuesday and Wednesday as that low continues its movement in the coast range.
The NWS warns that periods of snow will cause some travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility. The NWS urges motorists, tourists and locals heading home from the inland portion of the state to use caution while driving the area.
The Oregon coast range experienced a hefty dose of snow on Thursday night, as Highway 26 began to be innundated at around 7 p.m. Snow lasted will into the morning, piling up two inches in some spots. Visibility was already greatly decreased around 7 p.m., reports BeachConnection.net staff.

Travel to the Oregon coast may be worth the trouble, however. It promises to be among the most interesting places in the state, with high winds and big waves creating quite a spectacle. It will be slightly warmer than the interior, with highs the 40's. If you do travel to the coast, stick to the late afternoons, before dark, when temperatures will be slightly higher and snow not as intense.
As
far as the tourism business goes on the coast, local experts say this
is unlikely to affect anything at all.
Keith Chandler, manager of the Seaside Aquarium, said the primary reason is hardly anyone is going to the coast during the week anyway. Plus, he doesn’t see the amount of snow as a threat.
“It’s not going to affect a thing,” Chandler said. “I just had one girl who works for us come down and say there’s no problems. There’s some snow on the side of the road, but that’s it.”
The north and central coast are still reeling from a maniacal weekend. Seaside held a large Dixieland event that packed out all the hotels, and the entire Lincoln County and lower Tillamook County regions were full with visitors attending the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival and Pacific City’s Birding & Blues festival.
