Winners Announced in Oregon Coast Wine Competition
(Newport,
Oregon) - Oregonian's may think of northeastern Oregon and southeastern
Washington as a vast sea of wheat, but two couples in Milton-Freewater
planted a vineyard five years ago, and this month Zerba Cellars entered
Newport's 31st Annual Seafood and Wine Festival Commercial Wine Competition.
Zerba entered the maximum of three wines in the contest, competing against
a record 156 entries from 54 wineries. Their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
and Syrah all won Gold Medals. The Cabernet was voted Best-Of-Show.
Owner/partners of Oregon's only winery in the Walla Walla
Valley, Cecil and Marilyn Zerba and Mark and Dana Retz and their winemaker
Doug Nierman, have been dazzling the wine world with award-winning wines
since their earliest releases.
The 2008 Newport Seafood and Wine Festival awarded 25 gold
Medals, 31 Silver and 43 Bronze. In addition to Zerba (not Zorba nor Zebra!)
Cellars' three Golds, five other wineries each won two Gold Medals: Anthony
Dell Cellars, Griffin Creek Vineyards, Sagelands Vineyards, Spangler Vineyards
and Wine By Joe.
The panel of five expert judges, who have worked together
for many years at Newport and other northwest competitions, noted that
the overall quality of the wines entered was remarkably high compared
to previous years. The judges were Brooks Tish, Georgia Ross, Lorn Razzano
and Thomas "Mac" McLaren, as well as Gerry Warren, who said,
"There was hardly a bad bottle in the bunch." All are food and
wine writers, wine merchants, restaurateurs and/or wine competition organizers.
Newport's 2008 Seafood and Wine Festival opens Friday Feb.
22 and continues through Saturday and Sunday Feb. 23 and 24 at the Marina.
