Oregon Travel: Seaside Aquarium Helps Out Haystack Awareness Program

(Seaside, on the Oregon Coast) - The first day of spring means on Oregon’s coast means a special “Spring Open House at the Seaside Aquarium,” a benefit for Cannon Beach’s Haystack Awareness Program to be held on March 21.

The event goes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and will have a nearly massive array of prizes raffled off. Raffle tickets will be $5, with all proceeds going to support the Haystack Awareness Program, which needs a new vehicle and trailer to faithfully continue its educational program that helps preserve the intertidal zone beneath Haystack Rock.

Seaside Aquarium manager said approximately 50 businesses have donated goods and services to help out the benefit and the Haystack Program. Prizes include gift certificates from restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, ice cream shops, savings bonds from local banks and grand prize giveaway for a night’s stay and dinner in Portland.

The Haystack Awareness Program sets up shop in front of Cannon Beach’s landmark Haystack Rock in the spring and summer, providing educational information on what lives in the marine gardens just below the rock and how fragile this marine life is. It emphasizes caution while exploring the area at low tides – and Chandler said the program works well. They also have paid and volunteer staff that talk about the seabirds nesting on the rock.

Program interpreters use a trailer and vehicle they acquired from the military twenty years ago, and it was secondhand then. It is now no longer safe to use, so Chandler the Aquarium owners created the benefit to ensure the program continues to do its good work.

Gourmet appetizers will be served at the event. Catered by local restaurant McKeown’s, this will include meatballs, artichoke hearts and various meats and cheeses.

Aquarium and Haystack Awareness Program staff will be present to answer questions about marine life.

Spring Open House at the Seaside Aquarium happens March 21, 6 – 8 p.m. 200 N. Prom, Seaside, Oregon. www.seasideaquarium.com (503) 738-6211.
