At the north end of Nehalem, this sprawling shoreline of nothing but sand goes on for over two miles. A good two miles down the sand spit you may find spots to watch seals rather closely. But don't get too close: bothering them in their natural habitat is illegal. Or you can rent your own horse ride at Northwest Equine Outfitters and have a myriad of choices for rides. (503) 801-RIDE. Stand at the end of the spit and you'll spot the Jetty Fishery, where you can actually arrange for a boat ride back to the mainland. There’s a whole hidden world of maritime fun here. Highlights include their new restaurant, fishing and crabbing options galore, and the annual Crab Derby – which, among other prizes, includes a giveaway for a vasectomy. (503) 368-5746. |
