Hug Point Cave-Like Indent, Dramatic Sand Levels: Safety Tips
Virtual Tour of Cannon Beach, Oregon Coast

A cave within a cave, Hug Point

View 3: On another day, in another year (the last shot on the previous page was taken in 1999 - this one above in 2004). Sand levels are higher and made a different architecture to the shapes here. Directly below: another winter look of the same structure, tainted purple by the shades of dusk.

Even more dramatically, below: sand levels in 2013 during the summer are so high they enter the cave-like indentation in the rock.

Sand levels play an important role in beach safety at times as well. When summer's extremely high levels arrive, they create sandbars out near the tideline and extend the beaches much farther out. This makes beachcombing and playing in the sands safer - not to mention the calmer conditions.

In winter, these lower sand levels make for shorter beaches with much less space between the cliffs and the breakers. If conditions are unruly, this creates more safety hazards. Hug Point is already tricky enough, as the tideline can linger in one area for awhile and appear safe, but big waves do occasionally come in and turn the place into a danger zone. Watch those waves and do not underestimate them.
