Final Session of Oregon Coast Science Workshop Coming Up
(Nehalem, Oregon) – Slightly inland from Manzanita on the north Oregon coast, the town of Nehalem will soon host the last of CoastWatch's Summer Shoreline Science Workshops, happening on August 1 through 3.
The public is welcome and cost is $100 for non-members of Coastwatch or Oregon Shores. There are two scholarships still available at this time, however.
It's a chance to immerse yourself in coastal natural history.
The workshops will be led by ecologist Stewart Schultz, author of The Northwest Coast: A Natural History, and a wide-ranging authority on the Northwest’s coastal environment. He will be joined by Fawn Custer, herself a highly experienced marine educator.
The three full days of instruction will cover everything from tidepools and sandy beaches to estuarine and ocean ecosystems, geology and forests, and marine mammals and birds. Potential problems and concerns will be covered as well, such marine debris and invasive species. Each session will include field trips, laboratory experiences and indoor presentations. Some events may be weather-dependent, since it is, after all, the Oregon coast.
You have the option of attending just one or two days of the three-day sessions. The first day will focus on saltmarshes and mudflats; the second will be devoted primarily to rocky shore environments; and the final day will feature sandy beaches and dunes. Other topics will be interspersed.
More information is at oregonshores.org/index.php5. The final session is coming up in Nehalem, Aug. 1-3, at the City of Nehalem Meeting Hall, 35900 8th St.

Cost is $100 for members of the public. Suggested fees for those taking less than the full workshop are proportionate to the full cost, but no reasonable offer will be refused. Workshops begin at 8:30 a.m. on the first day; start times for the other days will be 8 or 8:30, depending on tides. Snacks will be provided; lunch is brown-bag.
