Oregon Travel: Week Ends with Stunning Coastal Weather

(Oregon Coast) - A week of bizarre weather extremes ends with a stunning weekend on the Oregon coast.

Beachgoers revel in the sunset at Otter Rock on Sunday

After a few days of high winds, extremely heavy surf, and a rotating mix of snow, hail, rain, lightning and moments of sunshine, the coastal region finally settled down to a pleasant weekend that was largely cloudless and devoid of wind.

Still, in spite of the beautiful conditions, temperatures were a bit on the chilly side, lingering in the 50’s and upper 40’s.

Friday saw the tail end of some of the mixed bag of weather that dumped odd conditions on the coast, including the occasional spot of snow. Thursday’s snowstorms left a few inches on the coast range summits, and by Friday evening the passes were a bit icy in some spots.

Although Highway 26 between Seaside and Portland was largely clear and dry, the previous day’s storms spooked a few coastal visitors, and some lodgings reported cancellations.

Up and down the coast, conditions became sunny and pleasant on Saturday and remained so throughout Sunday.

Brian Hines, owner of San Dune Inn in Manzanita, said his occupancy was fairly low on Friday. But Saturday saw the San Dune Inn fifty percent full.

Hines said the lovely weather drew many more to the coast on Saturday, with Manzanita slightly buzzing with activity.

In Newport, Saturday was the beginning of Nye Beach’s “Murder Mystery Weekend,” where visitors had to wander the beachside neighborhood and gather clues to a fictional murder. Members of the Nye Beach Merchants Association, which puts on the event, said the inclement weather of the latter part of the week scared away some visitors. But organizers were overjoyed at the weekend’s turnout of over 100, even with the weather threats on Friday.

“It was a great weekend,” said Deborah Trusty, owner of Village Market & Deli. “Beautiful weather, and the festival went fabulously.” Other members of the association applauded the weather as well as the turnout of the crowds.

Trusty’s other business, Blu Cork Wine Bar, was packed to the gills on Saturday, with everyone dancing and carousing to live jazz music.

Both Saturday and Sunday saw deep blue skies and brilliant, vibrant sunsets.

The forecast for this week is mostly cloudy and for varying chances for precipitation.
