Heavy Snow Warning Still Affects Oregon Coast
Range
|
Seaside covered by hail |
(Oregon Coast) - The heavy snow advisory continues along
the Oregon coast range, with even parts of the coastline experiencing
a small amount of snow.
The National Weather Service has changed the snow advisory
to a heavy snow warning for Wednesday in the coast range, extending the
warning through to later Wednesday night. Snow showers will continue Wednesday
with freezing levels near 500 feet. Above the snow level, four to six
inches are expected.
The NWS says a heavy snow warning means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or are currently happening. Significant amounts
of snow are forecast, which will make travel dangerous. The NWS urges
you not to travel on these routes to the coast except in an emergency.

The NWS is urging travelers who do drive the area to keep
a flashlight and water on hand in case of emergencies.
|
Highway 6, between Portland and Tillamook |
The warning extends through the coast range and Willipa
Hills, including Highway 18, Highway 26, Highway 20 and Highway 126, and
includes the cities of Vernonia, Jewell, Trask, Tidewater, Swisshome,
Frances and Ryderwood.
Tourists, delivery people and locals have been turned away
from the Oregon coast in the last two days, with around two to six inches
of snow falling on the highways between the valley and the coast. KGW-TV
channel 8 news even showed a FedEx truck giving up on the trip over to
the region.
Most of the summits along these highways are around 1400
to 1800 feet – the highest of which is along Highway 26 from Seaside
and Cannon Beach to Portland. Much of the coast range is above 1000 feet.
That puts drivers well above the snow level throughout this advisory period.
Things are extremely slow to dead on the coast, report some
coastal businesses, while others don’t think there is much of an
impact.

Gary Dielbolt, owner of Flashback
Malt Shoppe in Seaside, emphatically said: “There’s no
one here.”
“It was supposed to get up to 50 today,” Diebolt
said. “But it’s been sleeting and snowing since this morning,
so we’re not going to make 50. There’s absolutely nobody here.
It’s definitely deader than normal for a winter weekday. I suppose
everyone’s staying close to home.”
Seaside Aquarium
manager Keith Chandler didn’t see it as that bad. He said his attendance
numbers were identical to last year’s.
In
Manzanita, San Dune Inn owner Brian Hines called the situation a “mixed
bag.” He’s heard of no one stuck on the coast, unable to get
home, but hasn’t seen a big drop in business either, as much of
his motel is occupied by ODOT flaggers working on a highway restoration
project.
“There’s not a lot of walk-in’s,”
Hines said. “That’s pretty much nothing. But there’s
people here, and no one has canceled their reservations. I do have a construction
crew that came through yesterday and said it wasn’t bad on the highway.
There’s a couple here from Portland who are opting to stay another
night, and they never said anything about driving here.

“With Highway 26, you never can tell. If you call
the ODOT number for conditions, it could say they’re six feet under,
but it could really be pretty clear. It depends on how the state is doing
clearing the stuff away.
“On the other hand, I have a group of Tongans from
a construction crew that haven’t been here in two weeks because
of weather.”
Ironically, a big warm up is expected this weekend
that will bring the coast into the 50’s and maybe even the 60’s.
“We’re gonna hold a bikini contest on the beach in Seaside,”
Diebolt said, kidding around. “Actually, we are expected a lot of
folks because of the warmer weather.”
