(Oregon Coast) – It’s been a bit extra white on the coast this weekend, and more is predicted for the shoreline as well as the coast range routes to the beach.
Sunday saw dustings of snow in Manzanita and other parts of the north Oregon coast, as well as reports of some accumulation in the Cape Perpetua area, just south of Yachats and in Tillamook. But more is predicted for Monday, causing the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a snow advisory for the roads to the coast and the Oregon coast.

The NWS says another strong storm with gusty winds will hit the coast on Monday and Tuesday, accompanied by low snow levels. Such weather will also affect southwest Washington and northwest Oregon towns like Portland, Salem, Corvallis and Eugene. Corvallis and Eugene are expected to get some fairly heavy slow accumulation.

“Snow levels with this system will be very low at the onset Monday night,” said the NWS in a bulletin. Snow levels could reach 500 feet or lower.
“Gusty winds south will accompany this system, that will mix out the cold air in the valleys later Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Winds could gust to 45 mph or higher near the coast and over the mountains.”
Ocean swells are not expected to be a big story, with swells between 13 and 16 feet Monday and Tuesday. This could cause some slightly hazardous beach conditions during high tide, however. So avoiding the beaches during high tide is advised, especially as winds could accentuate the situation.

This
weekend’s severe ice storm on the coast range and on parts of 101
caused some stranded travelers already. Brian Hines, owner of San Dune
Inn in Manzanita, said he had at least two guests that appeared to be
stuck because of icy conditions on the roads.
More problems could be on the way, but not as bad as the thick layer of slippery stuff this weekend. All these snowy conditions translate to possible travel difficulties to and from the coast.
A
snow advisory for the north and central coast range will remain in effect
until 4 p.m. Monday, as the NWS says snow showers are expected to continue
through the day. A mix of snow and rain is predicted below 500 feet, but
above that elevation the NWS says an accumulation of two to five inches
of snow is possible on Sunday night. Three to six inches of snow could
drop on Monday.
“A
snow advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties,”
said the NWS. “Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities,
and use caution while driving.”
The advisory covers coast range routes to the beaches, such as Highway 18, 26, 20 and Highway 6 – which will have just reopened from weekend repairs that shut it down over the weekend. The advisory also covers towns like Vernonia, Jewell, Trask, Grand Ronde, Swisshome and Mount Saint Helens.
