Oregon Coast Range Expects Snow This Week

(Cannon Beach, Oregon) - Just as the Oregon coast shakes off the dustings of snow from earlier this month, more is expected in the coast range and passes to the beach towns on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
It’s not expected to affect travel over the passes, however, as snow will accumulate over 2000 feet. It will, however, mean tourists and travelers will get treated to some more scenic eye candy along coastal passes like Highway 26, Highway 18 and Highway 20.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is calling for more snow at higher elevations of the coastal mountains, the northern Oregon Cascade foothills, the upper Hood River Valley and the Willapa Hills and Cascade foothills of southern Washington.
“Snow is possible in the coastal mountains and Cascade foothills of southwest Washington and northwest Oregon, as well as the upper Hood River Valley, through Wednesday,” the NWS said in a bulletin.

Towns like Trask, Vernonia, Jewell, Grand Ronde, Cottage Grove, Sweet Home, Swisshome, Sandy and Silver Creek Falls State Park could be affected.
“Cold spring weather is taking hold over southwest Washington and northwest Oregon again during the first half of this week,” the NWS said. “Another cold system in the eastern Pacific will lower snow levels to around 2,000 feet later Tuesday and Wednesday.”
Snow could accumulate to as much as two inches overnight, and then again on Wednesday.

Snow accumulations in the Cascades could end up much more – around six to 12 inches.

What this means for the coastal passes, like Highway 6 or 26, is that there will be more white stuff lying by the side of the road at the higher elevations.
Businesses on the Oregon coast are anxious to get back to normal after some rough spots because of the big winter windstorm, as well as snowy passes during the winter and the freak snowstorms of spring and spring break.
Danielle Emerick, manager of Starfish Point in Newport, said she logged six days where snow occurred during this so-called spring: March 26, 28, 29, and April 18, 19 and 20. Although she admits there might’ve been more.

Patel owns and runs Tradewinds Motel in Rockaway Beach. He said the spring
snow sometimes caused problems.
“We had a bunch of cancellations,” Patel said. “Some just didn’t want to come. They were wary of coming out here when traveling was bad, the weather was bad, coming over the passes. It wreaked havoc on my reservations. Luckily, I filled back up sometimes with walk-ins and other reservations. But at times things were really up in the air. Am I going to do any business today? Am I not going to do any business?”
When the snow dustings hit during the beginning of Oregon’s spring break, Keith Chandler, manager of Seaside Aquarium, maintained students from this state got the better end of the deal, getting to see something quite rare on these beaches.
“It snowed several times, but it never stuck past 9 a.m.,” said Keith Chandler, manager of Seaside Aquarium. “Certainly by 10 it was all gone.”
