Steamboats, Blues and Geology on North Oregon
Coast
(Cannon Beach, Oregon) - The north Oregon coast will achieve
a kind of intellectual nirvana throughout July, with special events that
spotlight the steamboats of the region, lectures on wildlife rehabilitation,
local geology, local tribes, as well as some event that feature blues
and sake tasting.
The month of interesting fun begins at the Cannon Beach
History Center in Cannon Beach, makes its rounds to Dragonfire Gallery
and Inspired! Café, and includes a series of nature and natural
history programs at the Coastal Natural History Center in Seaside
 |
| Inside the Coastal Natural History Center |
David Pearson, Curator of the Columbia River Maritime Museum,
will speak on steamboats of the Columbia River at the Cannon Beach History
Center & Museum Wednesday, July 9th, at 7:30 p.m. This presentation,
entitled "When the River was the Road" is free to the public.
The Cannon Beach History Center is located at the corner of Spruce and
Sunset in Cannon Beach. For more information, call (503) 436-9301.
The ominous intellectual fun starts on Saturday, July 12,
at Seaside’s Coastal Natural History Center. That day, geologist
Tom Horning presents "Tsunamis and the Local Landscape," from
1 - 3 p.m. After the talk, Horning will lead a walk out to the estuary
to observe evidence of past tsunamis. Horning was a teen in Seaside during
the tsunami that hit that town in 1964, bringing firsthand knowledge to
this engaging subject.
On Saturday, July 26, Sharnelle Fee, who directs the Wildlife
Rehab Center of the North Coast, speaks on "Wildlife Rehabilitation."
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. She will bring along pelicans, northern spotted owls
and other birds undergoing rehabilitation at the center. Children are
welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

discover the vast distance the rivermouth in Seaside has traveled
in 300 years. |
On Saturday, August 2, Neal Maine, director of the North
Coast Land Conservancy, along with geologist Tom Horning, will discuss
"The Clatsop Plains and the Neacoxie Wildlife Corridor." This
talk explores, in words and pictures, the human and natural history of
this ecologically important area, from the creek’s mouth in the
Necanicum estuary north to the Skipanon peninsula. The talk takes place
10 a.m. to noon at the Coastal Natural History Center. All CNHC events
are free. 2674 Hwy. 101 N. Seaside, Oregon. (503) 738-5618.
For a dose of Ionian pleasures with a Japanese and Oregon
slant, July 26 brings another installment of the Summer Sake’ Tasting
and Blues series to the Inspirations! Café, located inside Cannon
Beach’s DragonFire Gallery. Various creative incarnations of the
drink are featured along with live blues acts to be announced. All sakes
are brewed in Oregon, and all fruit is grown here. 2 to 5 p.m. Corner
of 1st and Hemlock in Cannon Beach. 503-436-1533 www.DragonFireStudio.com.

| Rod Whaley performs blues at the Cannon Beach History Center on
July 26 |
Also that day and in Cannon Beach, singer-songwriter Rod
Whaley will be playing at the Cannon Beach History Center from 7:30-9:30
p.m., as part of the Acoustic Folk! Music Series. Tickets can be purchased
at the door: $5 for adults, $2 for kids. Gourmet coffee will be served.
Whaley was born in Detroit, Michigan and lived over ten
years of his life in Seattle. He has been an Oregon coast resident since
1990. The first guitar he ever picked up was a lap steel guitar. “I
grew up in a non-musical family,” he explains. “So it was
hard to convince my parents that playing music would become such a passion.”
But a passion it is. Whaley, who plays “acoustic roots,” gives
credit to his guitar heroes Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Page,
Justin Hayward, Dan Crary, Dickey Betts and Tony Rice. Aside from roots
and blues music, Rod enjoys playing folk and swing.
Whaley’s first commercial recording was in 1984,
when he recorded a piano solo for the first double record put out by Victory
Music. He has also performed with many different players over the past
10 years at the annual Tierra Del Mar Music and Arts Fair, and performed
weekly with bassist Gene Wynn at the Snug Harbor Bar and Grill in Taft
from 2000-2002. He performed solo at the San Dune Tavern in Manzanita
from 2003-2005, and has produced two CDs of original music with Jack Straw
of Portland, and Kenny Blackwell and Dorian Michael of California.
The Cannon Beach History Center & Museum is located
at the corner of Spruce and Sunset in Cannon Beach. For information, call
(503) 436-9301.
