Family Festival on Central Oregon Coast Celebrates
Patriotism
 |
| Barking residents of Newport's Yaquina Bay add much to the atmosphere
of this bustling town |
(Newport, Oregon) - Visitors and coastal residents
alike will celebrate Newport's 51st Annual Loyalty Day and Seafair Festival
May 3, 4, 5 and 6. The festival will include a traditional hometown patriotic
parade, a carnival, rides, arcade games, scholarship awards and the crowning
of a Loyalty Day queen.
This year’s Loyalty Day Festival celebrates Newport’s
125 years in existence along with the usual declaration of patriotism
and honors for the military. The theme this May is “Reflections
on 125 Years,” looking back on the town and its history, having
been incorporated in 1882.

The carnival begins on Thursday, May 3, and runs all four
days of the festival. It is held at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds on
Harney Street between NE 3rd and NE 7th streets. Lorrie Crook, treasurer
of the Newport Loyalty Day and Seafair Festival Association, said the
carnival is a large affair, with the arcade containing “just about
any game you can imagine,” along with plenty of big rides and food
stuffs.
On Friday, May 4, the festival holds it queen coronation,
which is more of a scholarship program that honors the achievements of
local high school girls. Members of the four-girl court will give a speech,
and the grand prizewinner becomes queen and receives a $1250 college scholarship.
The others receive $1000 in college money.

| One of two lighthouses in Newport |
The parade will begin at noon Saturday, May 5, on Highway
101 in downtown Newport. This festive march through town will include
floats, high school bands, horses, firemen, kids and, of course, the queen
and court of Loyalty Day. The emphasis is always on patriotism and honoring
those in the armed services, often featuring big military machinery like
a Blackhawk Helicopter or a Navy ship.
Every year, other businesses and civic organizations get
in on the act, bringing together such eclectic events such as a classic
car show or bed races. All this adds to the air of frivolity and energy
around this central coast beach resort town.

Loyalty Day, traditionally celebrated on May 1, was originated
by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and became a national event in 1950, offering
Americans an opportunity to rededicate themselves to their country. The
initial idea was to counter the May Day celebrations behind the Iron Curtain
just after WW II. American Legion Post #116 started Newport's Loyalty
Day celebration in 1956. While the national celebration tapered off over
the decades, Newport is still one of the few towns in the U.S. to actively
celebrate it.
