(Newport, Oregon) – It was on April 2, 1948, that 26 people met as the first members of the Lincoln County Historical Society in the then-burgeoning tourist town of Newport. Their first goals included publishing excerpts from Lt. Theodore Talbot’s diary of his visit in 1849 to the central Oregon coast area and preserving Yaquina Bay Lighthouse for use as a museum. Over the next decade, those goals were met, as well as many others.

This year, to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding, the Society will focus on the same goals established early by its members: to preserve, publish, and educate. The Society maintains two historic structures, the Burrows House and the General Scott building slated to become a maritime and heritage center. It maintains the Tradewinds Kingfisher, Stan Allyn’s charter boat, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Society also preserves the state’s largest collection of items from Oregon's central coast.
To continue its publishing tradition, the Society will produce a book on the lighter side of history. It will include humorous and whimsical accounts from the area’s past as well as photographs that will bring a smile.

To bring knowledge to the public, the Society plans three programs during the year. The kick-off event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, the anniversary of the Society’s first meeting. The second will be the annual meeting of members of the Society on Sunday, Sept. 21. This event will also commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening the Burrows House as a museum.

The final event will be Sunday, Nov. 16, the Society’s annual open house and Heritage Festival. A new exhibit will open in the south room of the Burrows House. This event will also take note of the first annual meeting of the Society on Nov. 18, 1948. All events and programs are free.

The Burrows House and Log Cabin museums and gift shops are open Tuesday through Sunday. The research library is open Tuesday through Thursday, or call for an appointment. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museums are closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission is free; a donation of $2 is suggested and greatly appreciated. The Burrows House and Log Cabin museums are administered by the Lincoln County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Lincoln County. The Oregon Coast History Center is located at 545 SW Ninth St., Newport, Oregon.
