Surf Contest Makes Waves on Central Oregon Coast

(Lincoln City, Oregon) - Surfing in Oregon is growing in popularity. There are now themed surf camps aimed at moms and sons, yoga surf retreats, and new contests up and down the coast. One new contest which debuted in 2007 was the 1st annual Either/ Or Surfing Team Cup. The Team Cup took place September 15 and 16, 2007 at Road’s End State Park in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Jason Garding, the primary organizer for the event, held the event as a benefit for a grade school water club. One unusual aspect of the Team Cup was the four person teams used for the contest. Usually in surf contests, surfers are competing as solo competitors, against the other surfers in the water. In the Team Cup, surfers were organized into teams, and surfed cooperatively. Teams were made up of employees from varied Oregon surf stores, and surf related companies. Jason describes the event. “You had to get all four surfers on the team to score at least one decent score per heat. After you get a good wave, you’re better off rooting your teammates into a few. If you’re sitting on a solid six-point wave you’re probably not going to improve on that much. It’s better to make sure your buddy, who may only have a 3, improve his score.”
The weekend
surf contest was full of highlights both in and out of the water. Jason
describes one of his favorite memories of the event. “One of the
coolest things I saw this weekend was Buzzy Morales and Tony Perez working
together on the same team. Who would have thought that a guy who prays
before every surf and a guy who spray paints his boards black and draws
demon heads on them would come together for the common good of the team.
I felt the love.”

Ken Wilson, contest participant, describes the event. “The willingness of people to help was awesome! Jason and I could not have done it on our own.”
Ken must have felt at home in the Lincoln City water as his team placed first.
Plans
are underway for a 2008 event as well. Jason and his crew are looking
