Oregon Coast Aquarium Springs to Life Over the Season

(Newport, Oregon) - Newport's Oregon Coast Aquarium is buzzing with activity for the next few months, with a ton of activities for kidlets, happening every week. Major programs about whales, encounters with seals, sharks and other aquatic beasties, sleepovers, parent’s day out programs and even a famed author show up to spice up the aquarium experience.

March 23. Sharks and Finned Friends Encounter. How many eggs does a wolf eel lay? What is it like to feed our animals at the aquarium? Learn the answers to these questions and more as you go on a behind the scenes tour of the facility and help one of the aquarists feed the animals of Passages of the Deep. March 27 – 28. Spring Break Family Adventure Camp. Bring the whole family to Newport to explore the best the Pacific Northwest coast has to offer. Join us as we explore the tidepools, take a wildlife watching boat trip, go kayaking up an estuary, come up close and personal with our non-human aquarium residents, and sleep with the sharks! 9 a.m. (27th) – 4 p.m. (27th). Ages 6 and up please. Dinner and breakfast are included! $165 per adult, $125 per child. $155 adult members, $115 child members. Families will need to provide their own transportation to events off sight.

May 16-17. Whales” Touching the Mystery - A Special Weekend with Author Doug Thompson. Jane Goodall (PhD, DBE UN Messenger of Peace) says this of Thompson: Why do whales living wild and free in the ocean, seek encounters with humans? Doug Thompson shares his thirty years of experience studying gray whales in remote Baja, Mexico lagoons, and with his book and DVD explores the mystery of this extraordinary interspecies connection. And he shares, too, his love for the whales, the place, and the people. It is an inspiring story, and illustrates how conservation of wild life, the economic well being of the local people, and the often life-changing experience of those who become involved are, together, weaving a message of hope for the future of the whales - and for us all."

May 23-26. Memorial Day Weekend - Opening Weekend for Oddwater. Summer hours begin - 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. The Oregon Coast Aquarium’s new exhibit, opening Memorial Day weekend 2008, is an extraordinary exhibit that will examine some of the most mysterious life forms that live in the ocean. Oddwater promises to be visually powerful, combining art, marine biology and subtle lighting to create an experience that will educate, entertain and enlighten visitors about life forms and subaquatic landscapes most people never see. Colorful art glass immersed inside the displays alongside the animals will be accentuated with lighting to simulate the environment of each species’ habitat. Opening weekend activities and events will include fun for the whole family.

May 31. Migratory Bird Day. Spread your wings and learn to fly as you dive headfirst into the ocean to learn about the wonderful world of migratory sea birds.
